Status:Active, open to new members
Group email: History group
When: On Wednesday mornings 10:30 AM
1st Wednesday of the month
Venue: Sully Old School

The History group tries to arrange outside visits, but during the Winter we have Talks in the Old School.

When appropriate we will invite other members of the Sully U3A to join the activity.

Those wanting to collaborate on research in Penarth or Sully or elsewhere can develop small sub-groups, either “Archaeologists” or “Historians” or both. This will develop organically.

Suggestions for Speakers and offers to arrange Speakers or Visits are always welcome.

Grandad was A Rum Runner - Speaker's Report

Cartoon Black American Car wearing a black hat to illustrate the talk.

The next talk will be on 4th March in the John woods Room at 10.30am

The Sanatorium Movement by Dr. Peter Smith.

The talk this month will be given by one of our own members, Dr. Peter Smith.

His talk is a history of the sanatorium movement in the management of tuberculosis during the height of the pandemic in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During this time the death toll reached one in four and led to the setting up of the King Edward VII Memorial Association Wales and the building of Sully Hospital in 1936 for the modern treatment of the disease.
