SULLY U3A - OPEN DAY
Whether you're an existing member, want to join our u3a, or want to find out more about us, the Main Hall at The Old School on South Road in Sully [CF64 5TD] will be OPEN to ALL VISITORS from 2 pm to 3.30 pm on Thursday 8th October. Our Committee Members and Group Leaders will be on hand to show you what activities we offer - ranging from Calligraphy to Rummikub or from Bridge to Wine Tasting. We have over 20 active groups offering a wide range of activities - too numerous to mention here! Oh! And you can get a FREE cuppa and a biscuit!

Captain Richard Wain VC

This month, as part of our Remembrance Sunday commemoration, we welcome back Dr Jonathan Hicks, military historian and novelist, to tell the poignant story of Captain Richard Wain VC of Penarth who was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions during the First World War. Dr Hicks will also tell the rags to riches story of his family, from agricultural labourers to prosperous local business owners.

To kick the New Year off to a good start, we welcome back Dr. Graham Cope for the third in his series of health talks.
Dr Graham Cope with INFLAMMATION - "a right pain in the neck".
Many of the diseases of the aging body, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, joint problems and chronic pain are a consequence or a malfunction of the immune system. What is inflammation, basically how does the immune system work, and what happens when it goes wrong? How do anti-inflammatory painkillers work, and what can you do and eat to help reduce inflammation?

Rene Lalique - his life and works by Mr. Alan Oliver.
We welcome back Mr Alan Oliver to give us a second talk about glass. This time his talk will cover the life and work of Rene Lalique and his rise to worldwide fame in both jewellery and glass and includes a short video on how this distinctive glass is made. Pictured is one of his most iconic works entitled "Suzanne".

Women Botanical Artists by Dr. Heather Pardoe
Dr Heather Pardoe is our speaker for March. She is the senior curator managing the Welsh National Herbarium at the National Museum Cardiff. Dr. Pardoe will deliver an illustrated talk celebrating the remarkable women botanists whose contributions helped shape the discipline and share highlights from the botanical art collection at the National Museum of Wales. Her presentation brings to life the stories of these pioneering women, revealing the challenges, limitations, and prejudice they had to overcome in order to follow their passion for botany during the Victorian era.

S.S. Great Britain with Ian Caskie
Ian Caskie was born and raised on Merseyside and grew up with an abiding passion for ships. In later life he became a tour guide for the S.S Great Britain Trust.
Today he presents an illustrated talk detailing the remarkable history of this great ship from the original design and her working life to her final restoration, preservation and "re-launch" as a multi award winning museum in her own right.
