Song stories is a talk built around the songs that shape our lives. Every one of us has a song that takes us back - to a first dance, a family moment, someone we've loved or a time we'll never forget. In his talk Dan shares anecdotes about famous composers and how some of the worlds best loved songs were created.

He shares personal reflections from his own career of having collaborated with many famous artists and having been instrumental in the first-of-a-kind underground concert in a Welsh coal mine covered by BBC Breakfast and the national news.

“Bridget Box, Acting Chair of the Flat Holm Society, started volunteering on Flat Holm nearly 40 years and has been a Tour Guide and Trustee ever since.

Her talk entitled, “Flat Holm - a Walk Through Time” covers the history of Flat Holm up to the present day, with visitors ranging from Welsh Saints, royalty, Vikings, the Army and thousands of gulls!”

Mount Fuji in Japan through Cherry Blossom

Through 10 words chosen by Kaori this talk will examine aspects of the Japanese value system which have become deeply embedded in the Japanese psyche.

She will talk of where these values originated and what place they have in modern Japanese life today.

Bell Tower of Church with scaffolding

Nigel first started bellringing in the early 1970s at Llantrisant ringing for over a decade at church services and weddings, including peals and striking competitions.

Following a chance meeting with a member of the congregation in 2022 a project to restore the bells which had been unringable since 2011 was established.

The presentation offers an insight into the history of bells and bellringing and the various aspects of managing a restoration project from concept to completion.

At 2pm : - Growth, Greed and Government seen through Glass

with ALAN OLIVER

This covers the story of the British pressed glass industry from the early 1800s to the mid 20th century. It spans the industrial revolution and is typical of mid-Victorian values and attitudes of that period. Mr Oliver will bring along examples and guarantees that members of Sully u3a will have memories of it.

Join Phyllis as she takes you through the working lives of the footmen and housemaids of the Big House where she is upper housemaid. A light-hearted glimpse into the homes of wealthy Edwardians at a time when employment in domestic service was at its peak. Hard work, eccentricities and gossip are all featured in this costumed performance based on real life accounts from the Edwardian era.

Jamie Hayes with a 30 yr career in Healthcare, Behavioural Change and Medical Education takes a light - hearted look at the hidden impact of the medications that you take.

He highlights the importance of medical reviews and offers insights into the questions you may like to ask.

Whether you're an existing member, want to join our u3a, or want to find out more about us, the Main Hall at The Old School on South Road in Sully [CF64 5TD] will be OPEN to ALL VISITORS from 2 pm to 3.30 pm on Thursday 8th October. Our Committee Members and Group Leaders will be on hand to show you what activities we offer - ranging from Calligraphy to Rummikub or from Bridge to Wine Tasting. We have over 20 active groups offering a wide range of activities - too numerous to mention here! Oh! And you can get a FREE cuppa and a biscuit!

This month, as part of our Remembrance Sunday commemoration,  we welcome back Dr Jonathan Hicks, military historian and novelist, to tell the poignant story of Captain Richard Wain VC of Penarth who was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions during the First World War. Dr Hicks will also tell the rags to riches story of his family, from agricultural labourers to prosperous local business owners.
